The Digital Leadership Excellence Programme (DLE), titled “Navigating the Tech Frontier,” has successfully wrapped up its first session, featuring 47 participants from government, academia, and various industries. This initiative was launched by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in partnership with Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

The Digital Leadership Excellence was developed in response to a call by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim during the 2023 Malaysia ICT Summit. Its main objective is to prepare a new generation of digital leaders who can drive transformation in Malaysia’s public and private sectors. The programme aligns with MCMC’s National Policy Objectives aimed at enhancing industry capabilities and establishing Malaysia as a leader in the digital economy within ASEAN.

Spanning eight months, the DLE included a mix of online training, workshops, and practical experiences. Participants explored key topics in digital transformation, including:

– Transportation innovations
– Strategies for talent development
– Sustainability initiatives for small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
– Green Data Centers implementation
– Development of a Smart Government Portal

The programme concluded with a seven-day visit to Shenzhen, often referred to as China’s Silicon Valley. This experience provided participants with a chance to observe cutting-edge technologies and gain insights into industry best practices. Highlights of the visit included:

– Tours of major firms such as Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI), a leader in drone technology, and Build Your Dreams (BYD), a top electric vehicle manufacturer.
– An exploration of Huawei’s expansive Research Campus in Dongguan, showcasing its research and development efforts.
– A visit to Shenzhen Museum City, which chronicles the city’s rapid growth into a global tech hub.

During the Shenzhen visit, participants showcased their capstone projects, which addressed specific challenges in their respective fields. These projects represented the culmination of their training and are set to be presented at a graduation ceremony scheduled for early December 2024.

The DLE programme aims to develop a total of 300 digital leaders over the next three years. By emphasizing cross-sector collaboration, it seeks to redefine leadership in the digital age and encourage technological innovation throughout Malaysia’s economy and public services. The focus on digital transformation is seen as a vital factor for the nation’s future growth and success.

The DLE has laid a strong foundation for enhancing digital leadership in Malaysia. The experiences and knowledge gained during the Shenzhen visit are expected to empower participants to implement transformative digital initiatives, fostering innovation and responsiveness within their organizations.
