Most 16 years old find juggling high school homework and extracurricular activities challenging. For Max Tang, a Year 11 student at Garden International School (GIS), his daily schedule involves mastering 10 IGCSE subjects already securing two A’s while training to become one of Malaysia’s top open water swimming sensations.
Max’s hard work is paying off on a monumental scale. Following a historic double overall championship win at OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu in July, where he bested seasoned adult swimmers in both the 2km Sprint and 5km Half Oceanman Max has been chosen as Malaysia’s flag bearer for the OCEANMAN World Finals 2026 in Miches, Dominican Republic.

His journey isn’t just about raw speed and stamina; it represents incredible discipline. Competing across both pool and open water disciplines, including appearances at SUKMA 2026 and the SEA Age Group longlist, Max embodies the ultimate student athlete model.
Set to compete in the 15 and 19 junior divisions this November 13 until 15, Max views carrying the Jalur Gemilang as his proudest moment yet. “I am very proud to have this opportunity and will give my very best in both races,” he expressed.
By proving that academic rigor and athletic passion can coexist, Max Tang is inspiring youth across Malaysia to challenge conventional limits and chase extraordinary goals.
