Lee Chong Wei Moves Audiences in Beyond Greatness Talk
Malaysian badminton legend Dato’ Seri Dr. Lee Chong Wei moved audiences with an emotional account of his life beyond the court during Beyond Greatness, his first personal inspirational live talk, held at idea Live Arena, Petaling Jaya.
Presented by AISEE LIFE, the two-hour programme brought fans and supporters closer to the man behind Malaysia’s sporting achievements through personal reflections, interview videos and on-stage conversations. Across four chapters, Lee Chong Wei shared his journey from representing the country to adjusting to retirement and finding new purpose in life.
Battling Cancer and the Decision to Retire
One of the evening’s most emotional moments came when he recalled his battle with cancer in 2018, the difficult decision to retire in June 2019 and the support he received from his family throughout the challenging period.
“Badminton had been my life for so many years, so making the decision to retire was never easy. But through everything I went through, my family, especially my wife, was always there for me,” he shared.
Despite achieving three consecutive Olympic silver medals and spending 349 weeks as the world’s number one player, Lee Chong Wei reflected that his success came from years of discipline, hard work and responsibility towards the nation. He also credited the support of Malaysians as a source of motivation throughout his career.
Giving Back to Malaysian Badminton and Youth
Today, he continues contributing to Malaysian badminton as Chairman of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM)’s Performance Committee, a position he took up in October 2025. Through the Lee Chong Wei Cup, he also hopes to provide young players with more opportunities to compete and develop their abilities. He plans to explore local and international junior competitions in 2027 to give promising talents greater exposure.
