In a heartwarming display of unity and compassion, over 500 participants gathered at Laman Astaka, Taman Tasik Titiwangsa on Sunday morning for Walk-A-Payung 2025, a meaningful 3-kilometre walkathon organised by Persatuan SLE Malaysia (PSLEM) in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine & Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The event was held in conjunction with World Lupus Day to raise awareness and show solidarity for those living with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a chronic autoimmune disease.
Participants walked under colourful umbrellas a powerful visual symbol reflecting the protection lupus patients need from sunlight, as sun exposure can trigger or worsen symptoms. This unique element of the walk highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by lupus warriors and helped educate the public on the importance of awareness and empathy.
Since its inception in 2007, Walk-A-Payung has grown to become PSLEM’s flagship event, embodying the organisation’s dedication to empowering patients, advocating for their healthcare needs, and fostering a supportive community. Lupus affects approximately 43 individuals per 100,000 in Malaysia, causing a range of serious symptoms including joint pain, organ inflammation, and profound fatigue, which often impact patients’ quality of life beyond just their physical health.
“Lupus remains incurable and can have devastating effects on patients’ daily lives, affecting not only their health but also their employment, financial stability, and mental wellbeing,” explained Prof. Dr. Syahrul Sazliyana Binti Shaharir, President of PSLEM and Consultant Rheumatologist at HCTM UKM. “Walk-A-Payung is an important platform to raise public awareness and strengthen the sense of community among those affected by lupus.”
The event was officially launched by Dato’ Dr Norsiah Binti Ali, Pengarah, Gred Jusa B (M), Ministry of Health Malaysia, alongside Prof. Dr. Syahrul Sazliyana Binti Shaharir. The morning kicked off with a lively group Zumba session led by the Royal Fitness Squad from Universiti Malaya, energising participants before the ceremonial flag-off that marked the start of the walk.
A significant highlight of the event was the unveiling of iLawan Lupus: A Patient Dialogue Book on SLE, developed by AstraZeneca. This groundbreaking publication shares authentic patient stories and experiences, serving as an essential resource to promote empathy and improve communication between lupus patients, their caregivers, and healthcare professionals. It is a critical step towards better understanding and managing the complexities of living with lupus.
Throughout the event, families and supporters enjoyed a variety of engaging activities, including creative contests, lucky draws, family-friendly entertainment, and a special meet-and-greet with members of the 501st Legion Malaysia Garrison, adding a fun and memorable dimension to the day.
