As thousands of students across the nation receive their SPM results today, a comprehensive new study by Uni Enrol reveals a significant shift in career aspirations among Malaysian youth. Analysing the preferences of 54,813 SPM students from the 2025 user cohort, the Pathway Match (PWM) Insights Report shows that while traditional professions such as Medicine and Law remain popular, the digital economy has emerged as the primary driver shaping students’ choices. In a clear departure from previous generations, Computer Science has become the most preferred discipline nationwide, with 6.58% of the total surveyed population selecting it as their top choice. This growing digital dominance is evident across nearly every state, likely influenced by the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and the perception of higher earning potential within the technology sector. State-level analysis shows the highest concentration of students choosing Computer Science in Negeri Sembilan at 8.46%, followed by Putrajaya at 8.36%, Terengganu at 7.61%, and Selangor at 7.27%. Despite the national trend toward technology, data from key economic hubs such as Selangor, Johor, and Penang highlights the continued appeal of traditional career paths. In Selangor, Computer Science leads at 7.27%, while the competition for the next positions remains tight among Accounting at 4.26%, Law at 4.21%, and Medicine at 4.06%. In Johor, interest in healthcare is particularly strong, with Medicine ranking second at 4.35% after Computer Science at 6.60%, surpassing Accounting at 4.19% and Law at 3.78%. Meanwhile, Penang, often regarded as a regional technology hub, records a strong preference for Computer Science at 7.59%, followed by Medicine at 4.28%, with Pharmacy and Accounting both at 3.61%. Across Peninsular and East Malaysia, students are increasingly tailoring their academic and career choices to align with evolving regional and economic demands. While Computer Science ranks as the top choice in 13 out of 16 states and territories, the broader top five disciplines reflect a balanced mix of professional and technical ambitions, including Medicine, Accounting, Law, Pharmacy, Information Technology, and Engineering. Notably, several localised trends have also emerged, such as Chemical Engineering appearing among the top five choices in Sarawak and Terengganu, and Nursing gaining prominence specifically in Kedah and Perlis. According to Rickson Khaw, Co-Founder and CEO of Uni Enrol, these findings reflect a shift in the mindset of Malaysian students as they adapt to the realities of a changing global economy. While traditional fields such as Medicine, Law, and Accounting continue to hold prestige, the surge in interest in Computer Science indicates a more pragmatic outlook among students toward future career opportunities. He also encouraged parents to use these insights as a starting point for open discussions with their children about aligning personal interests with emerging market trends.
