In a bold move to enhance workforce capabilities and adapt to the demands of the digital era, the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) is collaborating with Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. This partnership aims to revolutionize Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) by integrating state-of-the-art technologies and cultivating a skilled workforce prepared for future challenges.

The recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Manpower Department (JTM) of MOHR and Huawei Malaysia marks a significant step toward creating a high-tech environment for TVET. The initiative will focus on incorporating crucial technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G networks, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT) into Malaysia’s TVET institutions.

The first TVET Huawei Learning Centre will be launched at the Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) Kuala Lumpur. This center is designed to provide certified courses that equip students and industry professionals with essential knowledge in telecommunications technologies and hands-on experience with Huawei’s equipment.

The program aims to train an initial cohort of 2,000 individuals, including industry engineers, new employees, and TVET educators. Trainees will gain from a well-structured curriculum that combines theoretical learning with practical application, earning valuable certifications that enhance their competitiveness in the fast-evolving ICT sector.

Additionally, this partnership plans to establish more TVET Huawei Learning Centres at various JTM Training Institutions, broadening the range of modules available to include critical emerging technologies vital for the future workforce.

Minister of Human Resources, YB Steven Sim Chee Keong, reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing Malaysia’s skills training framework. The integration of Huawei’s global ICT expertise is aligned with the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy 2030, which aims to equip Malaysians with essential 21st-century skills in AI and digitalization.

Simon Sun, CEO of Huawei Malaysia, emphasized the significance of nurturing talent as a strategic asset for growth. This partnership not only seeks to share technological knowledge but also to create a comprehensive ecosystem for upskilling and reskilling, preparing students with skills in high demand across various industries.

In conjunction with the training initiatives, Huawei Malaysia will enhance the network infrastructure at selected JTM Training Institutions, starting with ILP Pasir Gudang. Planned upgrades include the development of smart classrooms and campuses equipped with high-speed 5G and Wi-Fi 7 technologies. These technological improvements aim to create an interactive and flexible learning environment that enhances educational experiences.

The introduction of data centres at these institutions will optimize training delivery and resource management, fostering an atmosphere conducive to smart education. These advancements will enable students to access remote learning opportunities, hybrid teaching methods, and Huawei’s extensive online educational resources.

This partnership signifies a major advancement in Malaysia’s educational landscape, with the potential to transform the skills training sector and improve workforce readiness. The MoU was signed during the Malaysia-China Summit 2024, following discussions on advancing Malaysia’s digital transformation initiatives.

By embedding cutting-edge technology into TVET, Malaysia is set to nurture a new generation of skilled professionals equipped to tackle the challenges of the digital economy. This initiative not only addresses the immediate needs of the workforce but also lays the foundation for sustainable economic growth and innovation in the future.
