Sumba Meets the Dancefloor: Weird Genius Unveils ‘Your Side’

Weird Genius is back to bridge the gap between ancient heritage and modern club culture with their latest single, “Your Side.” Featuring the powerhouse vocals of Novia Bachmid, the track is a vibrant celebration of Sumba’s musical soul, reimagined for the global electronic stage.

The track’s DNA is rooted in a two-week creative expedition across Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). During this journey, the group focused on documenting and reviving “endangered” traditional instruments that are slowly being forgotten by younger generations. By weaving the distinct sounds of the Jungga and Dungga Roro into a contemporary electronic framework, Weird Genius has created a soundscape that is both culturally significant and dancefloor-ready.

This release marks a full-circle moment for the trio, echoing the creative process of their 2016 debut. “Through this song, Weird Genius returns to its core,” the group explained. “Back in 2016, we went to Bali and created ‘DPS’; 10 years later, we went to Sumba and created ‘Your Side.’ We poured all of Sumba’s grandeur and magical atmosphere into this track.”

The atmosphere is set from the very first second, featuring a mystical intro by traditional Sumbanese musician Umbu Haling. This “magical touch” provides an authentic gateway into the song, before Novia Bachmid’s vocals and the group’s signature production take over.

Beyond the speakers, “Your Side” is intended to be the definitive soundtrack for the modern explorer. Weird Genius hopes the track will accompany listeners as they travel, vacation, and witness the breathtaking beauty of the Indonesian archipelago.
