The Nurts Tales: Growing Strong, Inside and Out, a storybook designed to help children learn about health and wellbeing through five relatable stories and reflection prompts. PETALING JAYA, 10 August 2026 — The Nurts and Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) have joined forces to make conversations about children’s health and wellbeing easier and more engaging for families through The Nurts Tales: Growing Strong, Inside and Out. The children’s storybook combines imaginative storytelling with trusted healthcare expertise, providing parents with a child-friendly tool to introduce important health topics in ways that are easier for young readers to understand and relate to. Created for children aged four to eight, the storybook features five relatable stories starring beloved Nurts characters Zoey, Mia, Liam and Noah alongside SJMC’s mascot, Teddy Paws. The stories explore topics including emotional wellbeing, healthy habits, nutrition, open communication and understanding illness. Through familiar characters and engaging narratives, children are encouraged to learn about their health while parents are given opportunities to initiate meaningful conversations at home. According to Adrian Tan, Co-founder of The Nurts and author of the book, discussing health and wellbeing can sometimes be challenging for parents, particularly when conversations involve complex or sensitive subjects. Storytelling provides a more natural way to introduce these topics while creating a safe environment where children can ask questions and express their feelings. The collaboration aims to help families build stronger connections through shared learning and conversation. Media, families and members of the community came together to celebrate the launch of the children’s storybook, The Nurts Tales: Growing Strong, Inside and Out, created through a collaboration between The Nurts and SJMC to encourage meaningful conversations about children’s health and wellbeing. As a play-based family engagement platform, The Nurts focuses on helping children and families connect, learn and grow through play and meaningful experiences. The partnership with SJMC reflects the hospital’s broader commitment to supporting children’s health through healthcare, education and community engagement. It also complements SJMC’s recognition as the No. 1 hospital in Malaysia for Paediatrics in Newsweek-Statista’s Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific 2026 and Best Private Hospital (Selangor) in the Parenthood Parents’ Choice Awards 2026. Joanne Lee, Director of Business Development, Strategy & Transformation at SJMC, said the collaboration represents a new approach to bringing health education beyond the hospital environment. Having been born at SJMC herself, she highlighted the hospital’s longstanding connection with generations of families and expressed hope that the storybook would encourage children to become more curious about their health, make positive choices and develop healthy habits from an early age. Beyond the stories themselves, The Nurts Tales: Growing Strong, Inside and Out includes reflection prompts, discussion questions and practical guidance for parents. These additional resources are designed to help adults introduce health-related topics in an age-appropriate manner while encouraging children to participate in conversations about their physical and emotional wellbeing. Dr Sanjay Woodhull, Consultant Paediatrician at SJMC, believes that children learn particularly well when they are curious and enjoying themselves. He noted that SJMC’s paediatricians worked closely with The Nurts to ensure the stories address health topics that families commonly seek guidance on. By translating real-world health concerns into relatable stories, the book aims to give parents a practical resource for nurturing healthy habits and improving children’s health literacy. Children enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon taking part in a range of activities, including an interactive storytelling session featuring The Nurts Tales: Growing Strong, Inside and Out, as well as First Aid Kit Essentials, Build Your Healthy Balanced Diet and a Body Check-Up by SJMC. The launch event further brought the book’s themes to life through a fireside chat featuring representatives from The Nurts and SJMC, including Adrian Tan, Dr Sanjay Woodhull, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr Wan Asyikin binti Wan Azlan and Joanne Lee. The discussion explored areas such as children’s physical and mental wellbeing, emotional regulation, healthy habits and practical ways parents can begin meaningful conversations with their children. As part of the initiative, SJMC will also donate copies of the storybook to selected children’s non-governmental organisations, extending the project’s reach to more young readers and families. The launch will be followed by a three-month community book tour at selected bookstores, reinforcing the shared mission of helping Malaysian children grow stronger both physically and emotionally. The Nurts Tales: Growing Strong, Inside and Out is available through major bookstores and The Nurts’ online platform, giving families an accessible way to use storytelling as a starting point for important conversations about health. Through the collaboration, The Nurts and SJMC hope to encourage families to make health education a more natural part of everyday life and empower children with knowledge that can support lifelong wellbeing.
