KAO Malaysia Joins Forces with Universiti Malaya to Drive Innovation in Skin Health Research and Community Care

KAO Malaysia and Universiti Malaya (UM) have announced the successful completion of the “Skin Protection, Life Perfection” campaign, which concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement formalises their joint commitment to advancing public health through skincare education and research.

Through this collaboration, KAO Malaysia, via its leading skincare brand Bioré, is contributing RM50,000 in funding across two major initiatives led by Universiti Malaya. The first initiative, titled “Beautiful Change Begins with Us”, will be managed by the Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) and will focus on hygiene awareness, environmental sustainability, and mental wellness for teenagers, adults, and children. The second initiative is a research project titled “Innovative Clean Skincare Formulations for Skin Protection and Healthy Living”, which will be conducted by the Faculty of Science at Universiti Malaya. These projects are supported through KAO Malaysia’s 1% pledge, which allocates a portion of Bioré product sales to local skin health research.

Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, President of KAO Malaysia, expressed that the partnership reflects KAO’s mission to create meaningful, science-driven impact beyond product innovation. He emphasised that skin protection should not be seen solely as a personal care choice but as a responsibility linked to public health. He added that the collaboration with Universiti Malaya is an important step toward benefiting communities across Malaysia.

The MoU marks KAO Malaysia’s first academic collaboration with an educational institution in the country. By bringing together industry expertise and academic research, the partnership aims to shape skincare as a pillar of community health. What started as a public awareness campaign has now evolved into a long-term initiative with funding support from KAO Malaysia, enabling Universiti Malaya to expand community programmes and enhance research with improved equipment and resources. This partnership also supports new research and public education efforts focusing on sustainable skincare practices.

Associate Professor ChM. Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Director of UM Community Engagement Centre (UMCares), said the collaboration is an opportunity to bridge the gap between science and society. She highlighted that the MoU opens the door to translating academic research into practical solutions, ranging from clean formulation development to initiatives that foster stronger community engagement.

The signing ceremony took place between the President of KAO Malaysia, Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, and the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman. The event was witnessed by Watsons Malaysia and further highlighted with a symbolic donation handover, marking the shared dedication of all parties toward meaningful collaboration.

The “Skin Protection, Life Perfection” campaign, launched in May 2025 with Watsons, highlighted skin protection as a foundation of confidence. Driven by Bioré’s “Cleanse. Protect.” philosophy, the campaign combined expert education, consumer engagement, and a 1% sales donation to fund local research. Watsons supported the campaign nationwide through exclusive rewards and member perks, bringing the initiative closer to communities.

With the MoU now in place, KAO Malaysia and Universiti Malaya are set to continue their long-term collaboration to advance skin health, support research, and enhance public education. Together, they are laying the foundation for lifelong skin wellness in Malaysia.

KAO Malaysia and Watsons Launch “Skin Protection, Life Perfection” to Foster Lifelong Skin Health Starting Early in Life

KAO Malaysia, in strategic partnership with Watsons, has officially kicked off its latest health-forward initiative, “Skin Protection, Life Perfection.” This nationwide campaign champions the idea that cultivating healthy skincare habits from an early age lays the groundwork for a lifetime of confidence and well-being. More than just a product push, this campaign integrates a full ecosystem blending Bioré’s skincare science, Watsons’ loyalty platforms, and a 1% donation from product sales to support local dermatological research.

“Skin protection should be more than routine it’s a lifestyle choice that empowers us to live healthier, happier lives,” said Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, President of KAO Malaysia. “With Bioré playing a central role, this campaign represents KAO’s wider goal of helping Malaysians embrace wellness from the inside out. Through our Kirei Lifestyle Plan, we continue to advocate daily practices that combine innovation, care, and confidence.”

Driving Awareness Through Education and Expertise

To set the tone for this campaign, KAO hosted a launch event featuring distinguished speakers and skincare advocates. Associate Professor ChM. Dr. Noraini from Universiti Malaya delivered a keynote on “The Science Behind Effective Skincare Ingredients,” highlighting the importance of long-term skin health through scientifically sound formulations. This was complemented by Dr. Lim Ing Kien of Ventamin, who demonstrated age-specific skincare routines, reinforcing that tailored care should evolve alongside individual skin needs.

Bioré’s “Cleanse. Protect.” regime simple yet highly effective was emphasized as a daily defense strategy against Malaysia’s harsh environmental stressors like UV exposure, dust, and heat. By combining mild cleansers with top-grade UV-blocking technology, Bioré empowers users to build daily skin resilience, translating to stronger, clearer, and healthier skin.

Watsons Empowers Nationwide Reach and Skin Health Accessibility

“Watsons is thrilled to collaborate with KAO Malaysia in advancing this mission,” said Caryn Loh, Managing Director of Watsons Malaysia and COO of Health & Beauty Asia at AS Watson. “Our reach, both in stores and online, along with our rewards ecosystem and CSR work, places us in a unique position to help instill healthier habits in our customers. This partnership is about enabling Malaysians to take control of their skin health, now and for their future.”

To encourage everyday engagement, Watsons is introducing a series of exclusive consumer rewards running from May through August 2025. As part of its popular W Rewards program, customers can redeem a Bioré Guard MOS Block 50g by using just 500 Watsons points. In addition, Watsons is also launching an E-Stamp Program, where shoppers can collect digital stamps with their purchases to redeem a selection of Bioré skincare essentials, including the Bioré UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist 60ml and the Tone Up Essence 70g. These initiatives aim to reward loyal customers while promoting consistent skin protection habits.

    Extending Impact Beyond Skincare Products

The campaign also complements KAO Malaysia’s community health initiatives, most notably the “Guard Our Future” dengue prevention program. This multifaceted effort has included educational talks, product donations, and community clean-ups, supported by the Selangor State Government’s Public Health Committee. Their participation at the campaign launch reinforces the importance of collaborative, preventive health strategies.

From 6 May to 25 June 2025, customers who spend RM80 or more on any Bioré or Bioré Guard products (excluding Men’s Bioré) at Watsons will receive the chance to redeem one of 400 exclusive RM25 Touch ‘n Go eWallet Reload PINs available while stocks last.
