Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s 20th Anniversary: Paving the Way for Global Business Events in 2025

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) is ringing in its 20th anniversary with a refreshed vision for 2025, highlighting its continuous growth, innovation, and commitment to sustainability. Over the past two decades, the Centre has become an iconic destination for international and regional business events, earning its place as a driving force in Malaysia’s economic and tourism sectors.

Since its opening in 2005, the Centre has hosted 21,825 events and welcomed over 29 million delegates from across the globe. The Centre’s contributions have gone beyond just hosting events; it has played a critical role in generating an economic impact of RM12.3 billion, positioning Kuala Lumpur as a key player in the global business events industry.

The Centre’s milestone anniversary underscores its ongoing transformation, bolstered by innovative upgrades and an exciting event schedule for 2025. As the year unfolds, KLCC will continue its legacy of delivering world-class events with over 60 major conventions and exhibitions confirmed, along with more than 70 corporate meetings expected, drawing an estimated 180,000 delegates from various industries.

KLCC’s 2025 event calendar is already shaping up to be a highlight of the global business events landscape. The International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC), returning to Malaysia for the first time in 11 years from 18–20 February, marks the Centre’s strong presence in energy sector events.

Another notable milestone will be the International Vulvovaginal Disease Update (ISSVD) on 25–26 April, marking Malaysia’s first time hosting this esteemed medical conference. The IUPAC General Assembly & World Chemistry Congress, from 12–19 July, is expected to underscore KLCC’s commitment to fostering scientific advancement in a sustainable environment.

The year will conclude with the International Social Security Association’s General Assembly and World Social Security Forum (WSSF) from 6–10 October, a major event focused on social security, bringing together global experts and leaders to discuss pressing societal issues.

Sustainability is at the forefront of KLCC’s approach as it enters its 20th year. The Centre has introduced several significant upgrades, including energy-efficient meeting spaces and LED technology, to reduce its environmental footprint. One such feature is the newly installed 20.5m x 1m panoramic LED screen in the Plenary Hall, enhancing the delegate experience with stunning visuals while remaining mindful of energy consumption.

The Centre’s sustainability efforts extend beyond just technological advancements; its commitment to reducing carbon emissions is a key part of its 2025 strategy. The Centre has made a Net Zero Carbon Emissions (NZCE) pledge, with a target of 25% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. As part of this commitment, KLCC is working with its clients and partners to build a sustainable supply chain that aligns with ESG principles and contributes to long-term environmental stewardship.

As the Centre celebrates its 20th anniversary, it is not only reflecting on its past achievements but also setting the stage for an even more dynamic future. John Burke, General Manager of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, shared, “Our 20th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the significant milestones we’ve achieved while charting a course for continued growth. We are committed to offering an unparalleled business events experience, underpinned by innovation, sustainability, and exceptional service.”

The Centre is positioning itself to cater to the evolving needs of the global business events sector, with a robust slate of events and a clear focus on future-ready technology and environmental responsibility. Through continued collaborations with partners like MyCEB (Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau), the Centre aims to strengthen Malaysia’s standing as a leading global events destination.

With its extensive track record, ambitious plans for the coming year, and forward-thinking sustainability efforts, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is poised to lead the charge in elevating Malaysia’s global presence in the business events industry, ensuring that the next 20 years will be as impactful as the first.
