YTL Cement Group has marked a significant step forward in Malaysia’s sustainability landscape by becoming the first cement and precast producer in the country to obtain Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for products under its ECOCem®, ECOConcrete™ and precast product portfolios. This milestone positions the Group as a leader in environmental transparency and reinforces its commitment to supporting the construction industry in making more informed, sustainable material choices. An EPD is an internationally recognised, independently verified document that outlines a product’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle, following global standards such as ISO14025 and the ISO14040 series. Widely used in green building certification systems, these declarations help developers, architects and contractors assess and select materials that align with modern sustainability goals.
During a celebratory gathering, YTL Cement Group’s leadership expressed pride in achieving Malaysia’s first EPD recognition for both cement and precast concrete products, a milestone made possible through years of research, development and industry collaboration. The newly certified products include Castle Cement, a Singapore Green Label certified cement designed for bricklaying, screeding and concreting, as well as ECOConcrete™ Grade 40 and Grade 35, which are engineered to lower embodied carbon while maintaining high strength and durability. Eastern Pretech, the Group’s precast division, also secured EPD certifications for its range of precast concrete solutions such as hollow core slabs, beams, planks and double tee slabs, marking the first-ever EPD achievement for precast concrete products in Malaysia.
This recognition strengthens YTL Cement’s continuous efforts to decarbonise the construction value chain. Over the years, the Group has introduced its pioneering ECO range comprising ECOCem®, ECOConcrete™, ECOSand™ and ECODrymix™, all developed to lower environmental impact without compromising performance. YTL Cement has also collaborated closely with CREAM, the research arm of CIDB Malaysia, to support national initiatives that advance sustainable construction. Through its Construction Development Laboratory (CDL), the Group accelerates research and innovation in low-carbon building materials, while the CDL Academy provides training and development programmes that have benefited more than 10,000 industry professionals and students seeking knowledge in sustainability and construction technology.
Rachel Yeoh, Executive Director of YTL Cement, described the certification as a meaningful landmark in the Group’s sustainability journey. She noted that obtaining EPDs for the ECO range demonstrates YTL Cement’s ongoing commitment to innovation and its dedication to providing materials that help customers meet their own carbon reduction objectives. She emphasised that the Group will continue refining its portfolio to offer high-performance, low-carbon solutions that support the growing demand for sustainable construction across Malaysia.
By securing these globally recognised EPD certifications, YTL Cement Group reaffirms its position as a trusted provider of environmentally responsible building materials. As the Group looks ahead, it remains committed to working with regulators, industry bodies and research institutions to strengthen sustainable construction practices nationwide and contribute to Malaysia’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
