Sunway Velocity Mall Lantern Making Contest 2019 – Launching creativity to the moon –

With Mid-Autumn just around the corner, we can look forward to seeing elegant and colorful lanterns lightening up the night. Lanterns are an important element in the Mid-Autumn festival and carries a significant meaning in the Chinese culture. This year, Sunway Velocity Mall hosted its annual Lantern Making Contest with bigger and better prizes worth up to RM150,000!

As a community driven mall, Sunway Velocity Mall organized this Lantern Making Contest in hopes to bring families and community together in light of this reunion festival. This year, the Lantern Making Contest was open to the public of all ages. Special categories were created for kids below age 12 years old and for students of age 13 — 25 years old. From 27″ July to 14% August, participants submitted their lanterns to be displayed at the mall, and on 15** and 16% August, the judges were invited to score the lanterns based on the following criteria: Category A (12 years old and above) were graded according to workmanship, creativity, color, and lighting of the lantern while Category B (12 years old and below) were graded according to the theme, creativity, color, and structure.

The judges for this year’s Lantern Making Contest were: Mr Kevin Tan Gar Peng, Chief Operating Officer of Sunway Malls, Ms Phang Sau Lian, General Manager of Sunway Velocity Mall, as well as representatives from the Lantern Making Community, Mr Koh Liang Sia and Mr Yap Boon Seng. “Mid-Autumn is a joyous time for family reunion and family bonding. Through this lantern making contest, we hope families could get to work on this big project together: to spark their creativity, work together as a team, learn to communicate better with one another and most importantly, spend more quality time together,” Sunway Velocity Mall General Manager, Phang Sau Lian, shared.

The winners for this year’s Lantern Making Contest were announced on 24th August during Sunway Velocity Mall’s first ever Lantern Gathering. The grand prize winner for this Lantern Making Contest walked home with a travel package for two to Tokyo, Japan, an ITSU Massage Chair, and RM3,000 cash prize. The 1%t Runner up also walked home with an ITSU Massage chair and RM2,000 cash prize while the 24 Runner up won an ITSU massage chair and RM1,000 cash prize. Ten special consolation prize winners were also chosen and received an ITSU foot massager and RM200 cash prize each. In addition to that, ten consolation prize winners were chosen and received an ITSU handheld massager and RM100 cash prize. Not only did the winners won luxurious prizes, participants who submitted their lanterns also received a box of premium mooncakes.

After the prize giving ceremony, the community joined together at Sunway Velocity Mall’s Lantern Gathering, where families from all over Klang Valley went for a lantern walk through the Velocity compound in celebration of this Mid-Autumn festival. Sunway Velocity Mall also invited kids from Yayasan Sunbeams Home, Projek Perumahan Rakyat, OrphanCare Foundation, and Persatuan Anak-Anak Yatim Dan Ibu Tunggal Kampung Medan to join the Lantern Gathering walk. There, families and kids get to play at multiple stations like the claw machine, sand art corner, Lucky Ducky pond, nerf gun challenge, popcorn and cotton candy stations, and more! The launch of Sunway Velocity Mall’s Mid-Autumn Campaign: An Autumn Retreat was a success. Families and shoppers wore bright smiles and the beautiful lanterns made by the community lit up the mall with the spirit of Mid-Autumn.
