Sony has introduced the MDR-M1 Reference Closed Monitor Headphones, crafted for sound engineers and music creators to produce audio exactly as intended, no matter the environment. With a closed acoustic structure that provides superior sound isolation, these headphones feature an exclusively developed driver. Designed to be lightweight and comfortable, they allow users to work in their own spaces while experiencing studio-level sound quality. The MDR-M1 headphones offer a blend of high-resolution audio performance, comfort, and reliability, making them ideal for various music production applications.
Sound Characteristics
The MDR-M1 headphones deliver studio-quality sound with a meticulously designed acoustic structure to cater to diverse music production needs and high-resolution audio. At the heart of their superior sound quality is a specially engineered driver unit that offers ultra-wideband playback (5Hz – 80kHz). This unit features a unique combination of a soft edge shape for robust low frequencies with minimal distortion and a hard dome shape for precise ultra-high frequency reproduction.
The closed acoustic design of the MDR-M1 helps to block out ambient noise and prevent sound leakage, making them ideal for various production processes where accurate note tuning and monitoring are crucial. A tuned port, known as Beat Response Control, acts as a ventilation hole to manage low frequencies, enhancing the diaphragm’s operation and providing tight, precise bass response.
Sony’s commitment to enhancing content creation and listening experiences for both professionals and consumers is evident in the MDR-M1, developed in collaboration with top industry sound engineers. Mastering Engineer Mike Piacentini from Battery Studios and Recording and Mixing Engineer Akihiro Nishimura from Power Station at Berklee NYC contributed to ensuring the headphones offer an authentic and enriching music experience.
Mike Piacentini, Mastering Engineer of Battery Studios, states, “As engineers, we often work with various formats produced in different environments and on ever-changing speaker systems. Having accurate reference headphones is crucial throughout the record production process. Working with Sony’s Tokyo headphone design team, we created the MDR-M1 to deliver accuracy across the frequency spectrum in multiple use cases. It’s a great entry point for any creator.”
Akihiro Nishimura, Recording and Mixing Engineer of Power Station at Berklee NYC, adds, “The tonal balance of the MDR-M1 closely matches the impression of Power Station’s Studio A control room. In recording sessions, the headphones ensure that musicians or singers hear what they need to, making it easier to collaborate and create music. The comfortable design also supports prolonged sessions, and I hope the MDR-M1 becomes a standard monitoring system in recording environments.”
Comfort and Design
Designed with comfort as a priority, the MDR-M1 features thick, low-resilience ear pad padding that ensures both a precise fit and airtight listening experience. Its lighter design enhances long-wearing comfort, making it ideal for extended mixing and mastering sessions. The MDR-M1 comes with two cables: a high-quality, replaceable, detachable cable with a stereo mini-plug and an adapter (stereo mini-plug to stereo standard plug), and a shorter cable for ease of use in various professional settings, depending on the connected equipment and usage environment.
The MDR-M1 will also work seamlessly alongside Sony’s 360 Virtual Mixing Environment (360VME) service to free creators from space constraints and heighten reproduction abilities from virtually anywhere.

The MDR-M1 headphones are available in Malaysia from September 2024.
