The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), operating under the Ministry of Digital, has launched a dedicated effort to accelerate the digital transformation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the country, starting with Penang.
This initiative, designed to equip SMEs with essential digital tools, knowledge, and resources to thrive in the digital economy, was announced by YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital, during a press conference earlier today.
The programme commenced with a stakeholder engagement session involving SME associations in Penang at the newly established Zon Utara Office of the Ministry of Digital in George Town.
This initiative focuses on addressing challenges specific to Penang’s industries in adopting and expanding digital transformation. It also aims to foster collaboration with stakeholders to develop actionable strategies, create an enabling environment for digital enterprises, share best practices through dialogue sessions, and strengthen partnerships that encourage digital adoption and innovation among SMEs.
Speaking at the event, MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil highlighted the importance of technology as a critical investment for SMEs to drive growth, enhance competitiveness, and build resilience.
“Technology is no longer optional in today’s fast-changing landscape. By leveraging digital tools and innovative solutions, SMEs can significantly boost their efficiency, competitiveness, and global market reach while improving overall productivity and operational efficiency,” Anuar emphasized.
“At MDEC, we are committed to delivering practical digital solutions that help SMEs achieve greater efficiency and competitiveness,” he added.
This engagement programme underscores the Ministry’s and MDEC’s dedication to fostering a robust digital economy that benefits businesses and citizens alike. To date, Penang has seen RM30.96 million allocated to Malaysia Digital (MD) grant recipients, with 173 companies in the state already achieving MD status.
“We are excited to see more companies attaining MD status, which will further encourage innovation and growth while enhancing competitiveness,” said Anuar.
The MD status supports businesses in the digital and technological sectors, providing benefits such as tax incentives, grants, funding opportunities, business networking, and access to specialized resources.
To encourage more businesses to achieve MD status, the Ministry will soon introduce a new initiative tailored to help SMEs reduce operational costs by up to 20% through customized digital solutions that align with their business goals and industry needs.
“This approach involves understanding the unique challenges faced by SMEs and offering targeted solutions to address their specific pain points and operational objectives,” added Anuar.
Key attendees at the event included YB Jagdeep Singh Deo A/L Karpal Singh, Deputy Chief Minister of Penang II; YBrs Ts. Kwang Ming Ng, CEO of Digital Penang; and leaders from Penang SME associations.
