Tourism Malaysia congratulates Sichuan Airlines on the successful launch of its inaugural direct Chongqing–Kuala Lumpur route, marking the airline’s second city connection to Malaysia following its established Chengdu service. The inaugural flight, 3U 3773, arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at approximately 11:45 p.m., creating a new gateway that directly links Chongqing with Malaysia’s capital.
Operating three times a week, the route connects Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) with KLIA (KUL) using an Airbus A321/A320 aircraft, offering a seating capacity of 160 passengers. This new service enhances accessibility between Southern China and Malaysia, supporting growth in tourism, trade, and cultural exchange while providing travellers with more convenient and flexible options.
Passengers and guests on the inaugural flight were warmly received by representatives from Tourism Malaysia, including Mr. Samuel Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director General (Promotion II), along with Mdm. Nuwal Fadhilah Ku Azmi and Mr. Azmi Abdullah, Senior Directors of the International Promotion Divisions (Asia/Africa). Also present were Mr. Zhou Cunming, Area General Manager (Malaysia/Singapore/Indonesia) of Sichuan Airlines, and officials from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

Mr Samuel Lee and Ms Nuwal Fadhilah Ku Azmi, along with other representatives, welcomed arriving Sichuan Airlines passengers by distributing welcome goodies.
Mr. Samuel Lee Thai Hung highlighted that the launch of this route underscores the growing tourism partnership between Malaysia and China. Direct connectivity from Chongqing enhances travel convenience for visitors from the region, while reinforcing Malaysia’s appeal as a premier Southeast Asian destination, renowned for its rich culture, diverse tourism offerings, and natural attractions.
Malaysia continues to experience strong interest from Chinese travellers, with 3.3 million visitors recorded from China between January and August 2025, representing a 27.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This sustained growth reflects Malaysia’s enduring popularity, supported by improved air connectivity, vibrant city experiences, renowned culinary offerings, and scenic island escapes.
Tourism Malaysia remains committed to strengthening partnerships with airlines, airports, and industry stakeholders to expand international air connectivity further. The Chongqing–Kuala Lumpur route provides a timely boost in line with preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a leading global tourism destination. The VM2026 campaign aims to attract 47 million international visitors while stimulating a significant increase in domestic travel, contributing to the country’s long-term tourism growth.
