History

The KidZania concept was founded and developed in Mexico in 1996 by Xavier Lopez Ancona. Initially known as La Ciudad de los Nifios or The City of Children, KidZania’s first location opened in Santa Fe, Mexico (a suburb of Mexico City) in September 1999 where it exceeded all expectations, attracting nearly 800,000 visitors and, to date’, some 41 million visitors in all of its locations across the world.

Since then, KidZania has expanded, creating a network of 26 KidZania metropolises around the world, including KidZania Kuala Lumpur. Coming soon are KidZania Toronto, KidZania Paris, KidZania Surabaya, KidZania Nagoya, KidZania Doha, KidZania Riyadh, KidZania Johannesburg, KidZania Abu Dhabi and KidZania Chicago, Dallas and New York.

Concept

KidZania provides a safe, unique and very realistic educational environment that allows kids between the ages of 4 to 14, to engage in over job 100 role-play activities across 60 different establishments. As in the real world, children perform “jobs” and are either paid for their work or pay to shop or to be entertained. An indoor edutainment facility, KidZania is built as a replica of a real functioning child-sized city, complete with buildings, paved streets, vehicles, a functioning economy, and recognizable destinations in the form of “establishments” sponsored and branded by leading multi-national and local brands.

At KidZania Kuala Lumpur, kids are the judges, TV crews and magicians in any one of the selection of authentic role-playing activities. Kids learn through experience about different professions, how a city works, financial literacy, living in a community and how to work both independently and as a team.

Among some of the interesting activities that kids can do during their visit to KidZania are: piloting-an airplane, putting out fires, being a paramedic or surgeon, hosting and supporting the production of a television program or enjoying the fun and exclusive experience of attending classes at university. By completing the prescribed tasks, kids earn kidZos which can be saved in the bank, or spent purchasing other goods and services.

Educational Value

Learning through role-playing is not merely fun, it also has very positive educational, psychological and motivational benefits. By blending reality with entertainment, KidZania provides an authentic and powerful developmental experience, preparing kids to understand and manage their world. Kids acquire real-life skills, learn about working and having a career and are introduced to the fundamentals of financial literacy. While children are having fun at KidZania, they are also learning socialization skills, mutual cooperation and respect. Their creativity shines, they learn independence and they develop skills in decision-making, creativity, critical thinking, communication, confidence, and collaboration by participating with the community —- all skills that they will need to succeed as _ adults.

Learning Destination

KidZania Kuala Lumpur has been endorsed by the Malaysian Ministry of Education as an ideal destination for students to promote both physical and intellectual growth. The scope of activities in each of the 60 establishments at KidZania can be linked to several areas within the various school syllabuses, effectively supplementing the school’s curriculum as a co- curricular learning programme.
