  • THE FIRST KOREA KIMCHI FESTIVAL IN MALAYSIA AT K PLUS FOOD MARKET, THE CURVE

THE FIRST KOREA KIMCHI FESTIVAL IN MALAYSIA AT K PLUS FOOD MARKET, THE CURVE

Malaysia’s first-ever Korea Kimchi Festival was formally launched at K PLUS Food Market under the auspices of Mr. Chung Hwang-keun, Korea’s 66th Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, and YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Zabawi bin Abdul Ghani, Director-General of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). The goal of the Korea Kimchi Festival is to provide tourists with a venue to experience the “Korean way of Living” and to provide fellow Malaysians a chance to immerse themselves in Korean culture.

The Korea Kimchi Festival is a collaborative effort between Malaysia’s first and largest homegrown Korean supermarket – K PLUS Food Market and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp (aT), a Korean government agency with the aim of educating Malaysians on environmental sustainability and the health benefits of wholesome produce and superfoods such as kimchi.

Having established a branch in Kuala Lumpur in July  2022, aT intends to spearhead Korea’s halal food market in Malaysia – catering to the Muslim population in the country. Since its establishment in 1967, aT has stimulated the export of Korean crops by operating a global export network to promote memorandum of understanding (MOUs) and host promotional events with large overseas distributors such as K PLUS Food Market’s parent company, KMT Group.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Chung Hwang-keun said, “On behalf of all of Korea, I would like to express what an honor and privilege it is to see Malaysians indulging in Korean culture. It brings me great pride to be here today to showcase Kimchi as a traditional food item that has stood tall for many years and is now the symbol of Korean food culture. In earlier times, Kimchi was made to sustain the harsh winter conditions but is now transcended into a driving factor for social interactions and bringing people together just as in this Korea Kimchi Festival.”

“The ministry looks forward to employing more efforts to strengthen the bilateral relationships between Korea and Malaysia through various food exhibitions  that will bring more people together. With Malaysia being a food hub with cuisines from various backgrounds, Korea is prepared to embrace the Malaysian food culture as well,” he shared.

Datuk Matthew Lee, Chairman and Founder of KMT Jaya Sdn. Bhd. was awarded the JangBoGo Award by Korea’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in November 2022 for his contribution to raising awareness of the importance of Halal products in the global Muslim market. He was also recognized for acquiring Halal certificates and distributing major Korean food products in Malaysia.

Datuk Matthew Lee said, “The widespread and ever-growing demand for Korean products in Malaysia is the driving factor for K PLUS Food Market to import more products, with special attention given to  a wide range of the finest quality of halal-certified fresh produce and cooking ingredients that can benefit the consumer’s health in various ways.”

“Initiatives such as these are the reason why I got into the business of distributing Korean exports in Malaysia. Sharing of cultures is essential, especially in a multicultural country – but more importantly, we hope to inspire a healthier dietary composition in Malaysians to reduce health risks as best we can,” he added.

YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Zabawi bin Abdul Ghani commented saying, “We appreciate the initiatives taken by  KMT Group in assisting renowned Korean brands that are in high demand to acquire Halal certification, which is a very important criterion for us in Malaysia. This portrays the company’s respect & understanding towards the needs and sensitivity of Muslim consumers, which is very much commendable.”

Held for a fortnight, Korea Kimchi Festival presents an array of fun-filled activities for visitors of all ages to join in. Kimchi and Bulgogi-making classes were organized for participants to learn about Korean culture and sharpen their cooking skills while bonding with their family members who are learning with them. For little kids, activities such as treasure hunting, name guessing, and coloring contests are held to educate them on Korean ingredients and recipes. On 27 May, an eating competition will be held for Korean food lovers to indulge and beat the clock to finish their favorite foods.

During the launch, Malaysian celebrity Chef and Ambassador of Korean food brands, Jongga and Nongshim Farmer’s Heart, Datuk Dr. Chef Wan hosted a Kimchi making class to demonstrate how to prepare kimchi with a Malaysian twist added to it – for local participants. Being a Kimchi Making Specialist with a certificate from the Seoul Kimchi Academy, Datuk Dr. Chef Wan explained the benefits of kimchi and why Malaysians should incorporate them into their daily diets.

The Korea Kimchi Festival will be held from 12 to 21 May 2023 at K Plus Food Market, located at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara.  For more information, kindly visit (https://kplus.my/ or https://www.facebook.com/kplusfoodmarket/)

  • AIMING TO SECURE RM120MIL IN MULTINATIONAL INVESTMENTS FOR LOCAL RETAILERS & FRANCHISORS, “FRANCHISE EXPO MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023”

AIMING TO SECURE RM120MIL IN MULTINATIONAL INVESTMENTS FOR LOCAL RETAILERS & FRANCHISORS, “FRANCHISE EXPO MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023”

The Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) has stated its goal of securing a total of RM120mil in investments for local retailers and franchisors through the Franchise Expo Malaysia International Retail and Franchise 2023 (FE MIRF 2023), having amassed RM100mil in multinational investments in 2022. This effort intends to further reinforce the retail & franchise industry’s contribution to the expansion of the national economy.

Previously known as the Malaysia International Retail and Franchise (MIRF) exhibition, its sixth edition this year observed its official rebranding to Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023. The exhibition is the latest world-class stage for companies to gather and showcase their best offerings, with the intention of exporting their products and services internationally. This coincides with the theme of FE MIRF 2023 – “Everyone Wins”, establishing itself as an all-new platform with boundless business opportunities in Malaysia and across the world.

Through its program, a total of 1,110 franchises have been registered under the previously known Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in 2022, while 68 local brands have successfully penetrated the international market and are now available in over 70 countries – generating a total sum of RM100mil in multinational investments through its last edition. Notable retail and franchise brands that contributed significantly to this success include Marrybrown, Bask Bear Coffee, MyKori, Gigi Coffee, and LaundryBar, among others.

Mr. Ken Phua, Deputy President of MRCA said, “FE MIRF is returning with its new tagline Everyone Wins because simply it is a platform meant to benefit both parties not only in the Retail Sector but also parties that are providing services to the Retail Sector. The name also shows that the expo places Franchise as a Key Element and is set to be the leading largest franchise exhibition in Malaysia, with over 400 booths, and 4 halls. We will be welcoming the participation of retailers from across the globe – this will allow us to improve and strengthen our relationship with different nations and encourage investment and business development between Malaysia and abroad.”

As the organizer of the largest retail and franchise expo in Malaysia, MRCA is proud to announce that they are back stronger than ever to spearhead the country’s franchise development. This year, FE MIRF 2023 is expected to attract 15,000 visitors from across the ASEAN region, in contrast to last year’s 10,000 visitors. In addition to that, FE MIRF 2023 will boast a whopping 450 booths across four exhibition halls for retail franchises and licensing brands to operate from.

Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023 welcomes the participation of all retail franchises and licensing brands from Malaysia, China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, USA, India, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. – to develop bilateral trade relationships, while strengthening existing partnerships. MRCA strives to keep achieving its objective of maintaining the strongest network of affiliates in the region to bring the industry to greater heights.

Through endorsements garnered from the government and strategic partners, MRCA is confident that Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023 will play a significant role in revitalizing the country’s economy through the development and growth of the franchise sector.

Ms. Christine Tan, Organizing Chairperson of FE MIRF 2023 said, “With our extensive capabilities and experience, we understand what it takes to expand internationally, and we are prepared to assist brands in expediting their global expansion. I am confident that the rebranding and expansion of this year’s FE MIRF 2023 will bring much-added value for our local retailers and franchisors, and we look forward to aiding them in generating overseas investments into Malaysia.”

Participants and delegates will be given opportunities to build brand awareness, forge connections with new business partners, and accelerate business growth in Southeast Asia. FE MIRF 2023 will also provide services such as business matching, career matching, on-ground engagement, round table discussions, and more for participants and delegates to meet with potential franchisees from all over Malaysia and overseas. As such, MRCA invites more franchisees to take advantage of the growth opportunities at Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023.

For the first time ever, a Best Booth Competition will be held for all exhibitors to show off their best designs. Judges will score the booths after the opening ceremony to determine the winner; The Best Booth Award will be presented during the Networking Dinner on 7 July, with a Grand Prize worth RM15,000.

Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023 will be held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 7 to 9 July 2023. For more information on Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023, visit https://mirf.my/ or its Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MIRF.MRCA

  • The Premier of Sarawak declares Sarawak as the first Legacy Capital in Malaysia and Borneo

The Premier of Sarawak declares Sarawak as the first Legacy Capital in Malaysia and Borneo

At the 10th Anak Sarawak Awards, which were hosted by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), the Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, declared that Sarawak would establish itself as Malaysia’s and Borneo’s first legacy capital for business events in the wake of Indonesia’s new capital city development on Borneo.

The industry’s role now is to drive sustainable, purpose-driven business events and strategically prioritise topics that fall within the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. As explained by the Premier, the old narrative of measuring business event success purely by its return on investment and economic values is no longer relevant.

Instead, the new narrative of Sarawak’s business events would be to measure according to its return on objectives and influence on sector and community development, environmental and social sustainability, and promoting good governance in addition to its economic viability. The business events industry, one of the six priority economic sectors listed in the PCDS, is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving the strategy’s mission.

“This is Sarawak adopting transformative thinking — first-tier thinking,” said The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. “Legacy impact is Sarawak’s value proposition beyond business events, but the proposition for all sectors and industries. We can no longer confine our thinking to just Sarawak. We must adopt a broader perspective that incorporates the opportunities present in Borneo. Indonesia’s new capital Nusantara is already developing and once it emerges, our business events industry should be ready to seize opportunities.”

“To support these measures, the Sarawak Government is already planning to develop new infrastructure,” continued the Premier. “Borneo Convention Centre Kuching will be expanded; Miri will have its own convention centre, and Sarawak is establishing its own airline to improve our connectivity around the region. We will also expand the manpower at Business Events Sarawak, who will drive these changes. The agency will take on a critical role and funding will be increased to support sustainable, purpose-driven business events.

The Premier also announced that the current Anak Sarawak Awards will be retired in favour of a bigger and bolder programme to complement Sarawak’s vision of becoming a legacy capital. The new programme is titled “Borneo Inspires Legacy Awards” and will encompass fresh categories and welcome nominations from all over the world.

Behind Sarawak’s transformation is a decisive strategy that is consistent with its strategic direction on legacy impact. “We are launching the Legacy Impact Master Action Plan in Germany on 23 May at IMEX Frankfurt — one of the world’s largest business events trade shows” announced Amelia Roziman, BESarawak’s CEO. “One component of the action plan is to recognise the innovation and social impact of the business events industry, hence the new award programme as announced by Premier.”

The 10th Anak Sarawak Awards is Malaysia’s first business events award programme. This year was themed “Passion Inspires Legacies”, a celebration of achievements and unwavering commitment. Out of the 27 nominees shortlisted, 9 winners were revealed. The winners are:

    1. Young Leader Award – Ms. Hii Mei Ching (Borneo Plux Sdn. Bhd.)
    • Journalism Awards
      • Print/Online Award – Ms. Priscilla Tawie Anak Sulok (New Sarawak Tribune)
      • Broadcasting Award – TVS (Sarawak Media Group)
    • Outstanding Achievement Award – Prof. Dr. Mohd Raili bin Suhaili (SEGI University – Sibu Clinical Campus)

To ensure that all submissions are evaluated fairly and with credibility, national and international organisations were engaged in the judging process. The judges are from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), Malaysian Association Of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS), Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), Sibu  Business Events Committee (SBEC) and Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC).

  • New Sony Xperia 1V and 10V Smartphones are released

New Sony Xperia 1V and 10V Smartphones are released

The Xperia 1V, the first flagship smartphone in the world featuring a newly created stacked CMOS image sensor with a 2-layer Transistor Pixel, is unveiled by Sony. The Xperia 1V is loaded with the newest technology from Sony, matching the high standards of creators while also helping aspiring creators who wish to film or broadcast their work with pride in the future.

“We continue to prioritise the needs of our customers and the new Xperia 1V allows for the next level of content creation, viewing experience, gaming performance, battery life and audio capabilities,” says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “The opportunities and needs for smartphones are increasing and with the Xperia 1V the possibilities for creation by photo and video are truly endless.”

    Elevating Content Capture

The Xperia 1V is raising the bar with its’ newly developed image sensor which depicts rich colours and textures of people, landscapes, and scenes in even dark locations. Due to the combination of the low-light performance, which is approximately double compared to the previous model[i] and the high-speed multi frame overlay procession technology of the Xperia 1V, it is possible to shoot a noise resistant photo with a wider dynamic range that is equivalent to a full-frame camera[ii].  The 24 mm lens on the back of the Xperia 1V equipped with a 2-layer Transistor Pixel stacked CMOS image sensor “Exmor T for mobile” which is about 1.7 times larger than previous image sensor.  In addition, the 85-125 mm (F2.3-F2.8) optical zoom lens enables bright portraits with little distortion.

S-Cinetone, known by cinematographers[i], has been adjusted and installed for mobile. Since the texture of the human skin can be beautifully expressed when shooting, it is possible to record an impressive cinematic image as it is, without colour grading. In addition, the new sensor has approximately three times of saturation signal level2 compared to the conventional sensor, and unique image quality processing suppresses noise that tends to occur in dark scenes, resulting in beautiful images with soft colours.

The Xperia 1V has a multitude of functions including colour presets such as Creative Look, also found in Alpha series cameras, and high-performance real time AF (auto focus).  Various colour settings are preset, such as colourful flowers and clear blue sky, or creating a soft, transparent finish. Xperia’s high-performance Real-time Eye AF[i] and Real-time tracking4 allows shooting with the focus on the eyes of a person or a specified subject. With AI depth that analyses distance information, even distant subjects can be clearly focused. Additionally, high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames per second with AF/AE[ii] tracking is newly available, so no moment will be missed.

    Improved Vlog Experience

Xperia 1V fits all creators’ needs with the Product Showcase Setting, which is a popular function in Sony’s VLOGCAM series and shifts the focus on the camera to the product, instead of reviewer’s face, when shooting.  Additionally, a new voice priority mic is placed near the rear camera.  Even when in a busy outdoor location, the creator’s voice is clearly recorded, so it makes an easy transition from shooting to distributing the video. When doing a YouTube™ live stream via the video recording function “Videography Pro”, chats from viewers can be viewed in the comment section simultaneously, allowing for immediate interaction[i] with viewers in real time. The user interface also supports vertical shooting, so you can shoot content in any orientation, either vertically or horizontally[ii].

    Immersive Experience

Packed into the flagship Xperia smartphone is a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz[iii] and less blur. The powerful and low-noise speaker amplifier improves the spread and depth of the sound, and the extension of the low and high frequencies, creating a more dynamic and clear sound. Xperia 1V offers an authentic viewing experience of movies and music without a need for an additional speaker.

On the backside, it has a functional tactile design that uses a uniquely developed texture glass. Combined with the fine slits on the side, it provides a stable grip and prevents from slipping when you hold the smartphone during shooting or viewing.

    Best in Class Gaming Performance

The game assist function “Game Enhancer” provides visual and auditory support for game players.  In addition to simply playing, players can also livestream their playing scene on YouTube. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform and Elite Gaming[iv] optimises the experience of shooting, viewing and playing games with superior level.

Long Lasting Battery Power and Powerful CPU

Despite using 4K display, approximately 20 hours[i] of continuous video playback is available with a powerful 5,000mAh battery.  It supports wireless charging, 30 minutes quick charge up to 50%[ii], and furthermore, Xperia’s unique charging optimisation technology supports users with a battery that maintains 80% or more of its maximum capacity[iii] even after 3 years.

By improving power consumption and heat dissipation, Xperia 1V achieves both high performance and durability, and possible to shoot for a long time while suppressing heat generation. Equipped with the Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform, the power efficiency of the CPU has been improved by approximately 40%[iv]compared to the previous model. The power consumption during camera operation has been improved by approximately 20%, and the volume of the heat diffusion sheet has been increased by approximately 60% for the heat dissipation performance of the main unit.

    Accessibility and Sustainability

With continued efforts to provide more accessibility, Xperia 1V includes a function in the Photo Pro feature that uses sounds to inform users the horizontal and vertical measurement of the screen. The Sony Group has set an environmental plan “Road to Zero” aiming for zero environmental load by 2050. In order to achieve this, we are taking action while setting medium-term environmental targets in stages. As part of these mid-term environmental goals, we aim to completely eliminate plastic packaging materials for newly designed small products by 2025.  Xperia 1V ‘s plastic-free package[v] is comprised of Sony’s unique Original Blended Material, which is made from bamboo, sugar cane fibers, and recycled paper collected from the market.  We are also working to reduce the amount of virgin plastic used inside the main unit. Some elements, both internal and external, of the main unit use SORPLAS™, a flame-retardant recycled plastic developed by Sony that uses up to 99% recycled materials. Style Cover with Stand for Xperia 1V (XQZ-CBDQ

The Xperia 1V exclusive cover has a grip on the bottom of the main unit to enhance the shooting experience. In addition to the conventional horizontal stand, it supports vertical stand, making it easy to use not only for watching videos but also for live distribution and video chat. The back of the cover incorporates the textured design applied to the back of the “Xperia 1V” body, so that the original design of the device is not compromised even when the cover is attached. Three colours[i] are available to match the body.

    Pricing and Availability

The Xperia 1V will be available in Malaysia from 3 July 2023 with the SRP of RM6,399.

  • Students Are Enabled to Reduce, Recycle, and Replace Single-Use Plastic Bags by NaSIC ’23

Students Are Enabled to Reduce, Recycle, and Replace Single-Use Plastic Bags by NaSIC ’23

The first time single-use plastic bags were eliminated from checkout counters by Lotuss Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Lotus’s Malaysia) was in July 2021, saving 26 million pieces from ending up in landfills and the ocean. By hosting the first National Sustainability Innovation Challenge 2023 (NaSIC’23), the retailer is working with the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur to further address the issue of circularity within the retail landscape. As a further demonstration of its dedication to sustainability, Lotus’s Malaysia is the first retailer of its sort to launch such a challenge through a public-private collaboration.

The launch of NaSIC’23 was officiated virtually today by Yang Berhormat Puan Yeo Bee Yin, member of Parliament (Puchong), Yang Berhormat Puan Jamaliah Jamluddin, member of Selangor State Legislative Assembly (Bandar Utama) accompanied by Professor Ts. Dr Ali Bin Selamat, Dean for MJIIT, UTM Kuala Lumpur, Professor Ts. Dr Abd Latif Bin Saleh, Pro-Vice Chancellor UTM Kuala Lumpur and Azliza Azmel, Executive Director, Corporate Services of Lotus’s Malaysia.

NaSIC’23 is a platform to give students aged 16 to 19 from schools across Malaysia the opportunity to learn to develop and share impactful sustainable solutions to reduce, recycle and replace single-use plastics within the retailer’s stores. 130 teams from 77 schools enrolled when the challenge was first announced on 12 April 2023. At today’s launch, 50 teams were shortlisted for the semi-final round and will be competing for the five top spots in the finals that will be held at Lotus’s Selayang on 22 July 2023.

“We are thrilled that MJIIT-UTM has chosen Lotus’s Malaysia as their partner for NaSIC’23. I am looking forward to the proposals submitted from the students to bring in fresh perspectives and sustainable solutions that we can adopt within our business operations. This is one of the many ways to make sustainability integrated into all aspects of education and make Malaysian youth feel empowered in creating a sustainable future,” said Azliza Azmel, Executive Director, Corporate Services of Lotus’s Malaysia.

Throughout the month of May and June, 150 students from the 50 teams will undergo a series of follow up workshops guided and facilitated by experts from MJIIT-UTM. The participants are expected to pitch their innovative ideas virtually via the Webex meeting platform on Saturday, 17th June 2023 for a place in the finals.

Prof. Ts. Dr. Ali Selamat, Dean of MJIIT-UTM elaborated, “Overall, this competition was carefully crafted to include in the problem-solving process to generate innovative ideas to help them gain valuable soft skills. Our facilitations in the workshops were developed based on the design thinking framework and the Need, Approach, Benefits and Competition (NABC) pitching model. This helps the students to identify solutions and to communicate effectively. As an institution of higher learning, UTM plays an important role to raise awareness, teach and prepare the next generation to address real-world challenges experienced by retailers like Lotus’s Malaysia.”

The promising solutions to reduce, recycle and replace single-use plastics will receive prizes worth more than RM2,500. MJIIT-UTM will further develop the winning idea into a feasible operational solution that will benefit Lotus’s Malaysia and potentially the retail industry.
