  • Sarawak to host first International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria in Malaysia

Sarawak to host first International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria in Malaysia

Sarawak continues to establish itself as the leading hub in Malaysia for advancing public health medicine after winning the 21st International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria (ICTMM 2024), set to take place between 19-23 September 2024 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. This will mark Malaysia’s debut as the host for one of the world’s leading Congresses in tropical medicine and Malaria.

The international bidding was a collaboration between the Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine, Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) and Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).

ICTMM 2024 is organised by the International Federation of Tropical Medicine and Malaria (IFTM) and the Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine (MSTPM) and supported by: Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak; Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak; Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak; Sarawak State Health Department; Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS); BESarawak, and MyCEB.

The congress, themed “Global Responses and Interdisciplinary Research Towards Eliminating Tropical Diseases”, will be jointly held with the 60th Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine Conference (MSPTM 2024) and the 10th ASEAN Congress of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology (10th ACTMP). As a highly coveted global event, ICTMM 2024 is expected to attract more than 2,000 scientists, physicians, researchers, policy makers and international authorities to discuss current tropical medicine topics such as malaria, neglected diseases, drug resistance, travel medicine and zoonoses (diseases and infections that are transmitted between animals and humans).

“Sarawak’s tropical climate and geographical diversity create various habitats for disease vectors, leading to higher infection and transmission rates of tropical diseases,” said The Honourable Dato Sri Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak’s Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government at today’s press conference. “Sarawak’s Malaria Research Centre by UNIMAS has been instrumental in studying the genetic diversity and transmission of malaria. Another establishment that we look forward to is the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre, which is expected to open by 2024. Tropical diseases will be a major study and for the centre to reach its full potential, the Sarawak Research and Development Council recently concluded its meetings with Imperial College London and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland earlier this month to discuss how they can collaborate and do research in Sarawak. We are highly optimistic that this collaboration will take place”.

“The greatest attraction of ICTMM is that it rotates in different countries so that it is truly international in focus and venue,” said Professor Dr Malcolm Jones, President of the International Federation of Tropical Medicine and Malaria. “Sarawak has a unique setting to study malaria and other tropical diseases due to its diverse ecosystem and varied malaria transmission patterns, providing a range of tropical medicine dynamics for investigation. The Federation’s role is to ensure that modern society and the scientific and medical communities, especially in regions such as Asia Pacific are kept informed and connected for the global progress of tropical medicine.”

Besides knowledge sharing and networking, an expected outcome of the congress is to contribute to global health where knowledge, insights, and collaborations gained from the congress can be translated into practical solutions and interventions that address the challenges of tropical diseases in their respective regions.

“ICTMM has been hosted for over 100 years and our ultimate goal is to lead the world’s conversations and knowledge in tropical medicine through collaborations between national and international federated societies”, stated Professor Dr. Siti Nursheena Mohd Zain, ICTMM 2024’s Organising Chair. “There is a need to emphasise the importance of global cooperation and collaborations in the fight against tropical diseases. We must explore a multidisciplinary approach to achieve the common goal of eliminating tropical diseases. It is only through collaborations, we can share best practices, exchange ideas, and learn from one another’s experiences. It opens doors to multidisciplinary approaches, where experts from various fields can work together to develop innovative interventions, diagnostic tools, and treatment strategies. ”.

ICTMM 2024 is expected to fetch RM24.6 million in total economic impact, of which RM13.4 million will derive from direct delegate expenditure. An additional 1,952 jobs will arise from organising and hosting the congress. As for the legacy impact or the broader values of the congress, the Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine aspires to be at the forefront of fostering global collaborations within the scientific community and driving transformative change.

“As Malaysia and Borneo’s legacy capital for business events, we are working closely with the congress committee to help achieve their legacy impact”, said Amelia Roziman, BESarawak’s CEO. “Sarawak’s business events industry places high value on collaborations and we hope that by being the host destination for ICTMM, the congress will be the key to Malaysia and Asia’s tropical medicine advancements.”

Delegate registration is now open starting from RM450  for Malaysians and US $100 for international delegates. For more information on the congress, please email secretariat@ictmm2024.org or visit https://ictmm2024.org/.

  • SEARCH – Fantasia Bulan Salju Concert 2023

SEARCH – Fantasia Bulan Salju Concert 2023

KONSERT FANTASSIA BULAN SALJU will take place on August 12, 2023 (Saturday), at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting, as officially announced today to members of the media at an exclusive press conference by SEARCH, which includes its renowned members Amy, Nasir, Hillary Ang, and Man Kidal.

With years of experience under their belt especially in organising concerts for famous international artists such as Super Junior – D&E (Korea), Jeff Chang (Taiwan), Liza Wang (Hong Kong) and Michael Learns to Rock (Denmark), SEARCH is both proud and humbled to be given the opportunity by MIC Entertainment Group as their first Malay local artist and rock band to perform at the prestigious venue, thus cementing SEARCH’s status as a prominent rock band in Malaysia, acknowledged by its fraternity and rock and roll fans all across the country

“Since its inception way back in the 80s and up to this day, SEARCH has consistently been on the radar of internationally acclaimed concert and/or event organisers resulting in a steady stream of invitations and offers to entertain our fans from around this region. As much as this has been part of our lives, we also perceive this as a huge responsibility especially with the advancement of technology and music fans are a lot more sophisticated and spoilt for choice. Having said that, SEARCH is not one to turn down a challenge. We respect our fans and care about the SEARCH legacy too much to say no to rocking out on stage”.

“Each one of our concert are unique in its own way, and KONSERT FANTASIA BULAN SALJU is no exception. Die hard fans of SEARCH would notice that the title of this concert is inspired by one of SEARCH’s monster hit, ‘Fantasia Bulan Madu’, which other than Isabella, is widely regarded as one of the most important 90s rock anthem”, explains Nasir who is one of SEARCH’s earliest member.

Datuk Amy then continues, “KONSERT FANTASIA BULAN SALJU is the culmination of SEARCH’s career spanning four decades. We have all experienced so much during this period – both good and bad. As a group, this is the core of SEARCH and I wouldn’t have it any other way”.

“However, I must say that one of the most outstanding pull of this concert is the venue itself. Other than it being located at one of the country’s most popular holiday destination at Resorts World Genting, this venue also has all the facilities required for a concert of international level and I am confident that our fans, the ones that have been supporting us since the beginning as well as new fans from the younger generation, will get to experience the magnificence and calibre of KONSERT FANTASIA BULAN SALJU in many ways. Other than comfort, it is important for us to ensure that the concert is delivered at highest standard, so we are not compromising on quality, safety, immaculate style and all other factors that makes a memorable, entertaining and an all-around brilliant night,” the fashionable Amy enthuses further.

As an added information, Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting has the capacity to receive up to 5,000 audience member at one time. Due to its fantastic facilities, the venue has played host to a number of entertainment award shows. After creating history last year by being acknowledged as the first artist or rock band to perform at ZeppKL, this could be another history in the making as SEARCH became the first Malay act to be given the opportunity by MIC Entertainment Group to perform at Arena of Stars.

Brian Lim, CEO of MIC Entertainment Group, said, “We are very proud of this three-pronged collaboration between SEARCH, MIC Entertainment Group and Resorts World Genting”

“Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting is a global brand with a fantastic track record in organising world-class events and concerts, and as a rock band with such a legendary status, SEARCH is the right choice as MIC Entertainment Group’s first local Malay act to hold a solo concert at the venue. In fact, it is currently one of our mission to expand this portfolio and include more homegrown Malaysian artists to perform at Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting. With its state-of-the-art facilities including a high-tech audio and lighting system, a stadium-style audience layout, VIP boxes and other features that promises an epic concert that will definitely go down in the country’s music industry history, especially the rock and roll scene. As at today, I have information that 60 percent of tickets have already been snapped up by SEARCH fans from even as far as Europe.”

Datuk Amy adds, “Together with my band members, Nasir, Hillary and Man Kidal, we can’t wait to meet all our fans amidst the clouds and cool gentle breeze. Besides our signature SEARCH songs, there will also be various surprises. It’s definitely a concert that can’t be missed. See you at Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting on 12 August 2023! Pheewiiittt!”

Tickets for KONSERT FANTASIA BULAN SALJU have started to go on sale starting from 16 May 2023. Prices start from RM128.00 up to RM388.00 (VIP Fantasia) exclude processing fee. All VIP ticket holders are entitled to attend the Meet and Greet as well as a signed poster of the band.

The organisers, MIC Entertainment Group and SEARCH stressed at the Press Conference today the importance for all SEARCH fans from the six states that are involved with the country’s state election (PRN) to fulfill their obligations and exercise their duties before making their way to the concert venue. They would also like to thank all collaborators especially Le Meriden Petaling Jaya Hotel as an event venue for the press conference.

  • Sony and Zoom partner to bring video conferencing to BRAVIA TVs

Sony announced that Zoom Video Communications, Inc. will be coming to Sony’s BRAVIA TVs that are compatible with BRAVIA CAM[i]. This partnership will allow users to easily connect with friends, family, and colleagues for video calls and meetings from the comfort of their living room. Sony’s BRAVIA is the first TV brand to support the Zoom for TV app on Google Play Store.

With Zoom on BRAVIA TVs, users will be able to take advantage of all the features that make Zoom one of the leading video communication platforms. This includes video communication on a TV screen, screen sharing, and collaboration tools. Users will also be able to use BRAVIA CAM’s advanced features – it recognises where you are in the room and how far you are from the TV, then adjusts sound and picture settings so they’re just right. All of that is possible with a very simple setup – when using a compatible TV with a BRAVIA CAM, it only takes downloading the Zoom app from Google Play and launching it with the TV’s remote.

“We are excited to partner with Zoom to bring video conferencing to our BRAVIA TVs, making Zoom services available on the Android TV platform” said Shusuke Tomonaga, Head of BRAVIA TV Product Design, Product Technology Center, Sony Corporation. “This partnership will make it possible for our customers to enjoy more realistic video communication on a large TV screen in the living room, enabling them to be more connected with the people they care about, whether they are working from home, learning remotely, or just catching up with friends and family.”

“We are thrilled to work with Sony to bring Zoom to their BRAVIA TVs,” said Eric Yu, Head of Hardware Partnership at Zoom. “We are allowing our customers to enjoy the best of both worlds – the convenience of video conferencing on their TV and the power of Zoom’s collaboration tools.”

    Availability

Zoomwill be available on select BRAVIA TVs that are compatible with BRAVIA CAM1 in Malaysia from July 2023.

  • Sony Releases Interchangeable Lens Camera a6700,Compact Shotgun Microphone ECM-M1 and the FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II Lens™

Sony Electronics announces the release of its newest APS-C mirrorless camera, the α6700 (ILCE-6700). This new offering combines the cutting-edge still image and video capabilities found in the latest full-frame Alpha™ and Cinema Line series with the compact and lightweight design of the α6000 series, resulting in a Sony’s most advanced APS-C mirrorless camera to date.

Combining an APS-C back-illuminated Exmor R® CMOS image sensor boasting 26.0 effective megapixels with the speed and power of Sony’s advanced BIONZ XR® processing engine, the α6700 achieves exceptional imaging performance while maintaining a compact and lightweight design.

The camera supports high-resolution 4K video recording at up to 120fps[i], a wide latitude of 14+ stops[ii] for capturing details in harsh or under-lit conditions and features the S-Cinetone™ picture profile found in Sony’s professional Cinema Line for refined movie imagery that doesn’t require colour grading, and it delivers stunning representation of human skin tones. For videographers and vloggers, Sony simultaneously releases the ECM-M1 shotgun microphone, capable of high-quality sound with eight sound pickup modes including stereo

Highly accurate subject recognition with AI

The latest APS-C size, back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor boasts approximately 26.0 effective megapixels, paired with our advanced BIONZ XR engine for exceptional imaging performance. Standard ISO sensitivity spans 100 to 32000 for both stills and movies, allowing high-sensitivity, low-noise shooting. Enhanced colour reproduction ensures subjects like people and plants are captured with natural hues, while Creative Look features allow unique visual expressions.

The AI processing unit is inherited from the “α7R V,” enabling high accuracy “Real-Time Recognition AF (autofocus).” Beyond the α6000 series’ human and animal recognition, it now accurately identifies various subjects such as human, animal, bird, insect, car/train, and airplane, catering to diverse creative expressions. When paired with today’s newly launched FE 70-200mm F4.0 G Macro OSS II [iii], it offers 105 mm to 300 mm focal lengths in 35mm full-frame equivalent, leveraging the power of telephoto zoom for high-quality shooting. Additionally, it’s compatible with a broad array of E-mount lenses, and Sony’s E-mount lenses covering full-frame and Cinema Line cameras with a single mount.

Excellent video performance compatible with 4K120p1

Harnessing data equivalent to 6K, the α6700 outputs superior 4K video, including support for high-frame-rate recording at 4K 120fps. It features S-Log3, offering a latitude of 14+2 above, for stellar gradation. Also equipped with S-Cinetone, the α6700 offers impressive skin tone depiction and subject highlighting, technologies honed through our Cinema Line development, while its AI-driven Auto-Framing[iv] smoothly tracks subjects, eliminating the need for manual camera movement. The body houses a Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe compatible with digital audio interfaces. Used in conjunction with our new ECM-M1 shotgun microphone, it allows for direct digital audio transmission, capturing high-quality, undegraded sound.

Mobility, operability, and connectivity unique to a compact and lightweight device

With a compact design (approx. 4 7/8 × 2 3/4 × 3 in. and weighing about 1 lb 1.4 oz[v].), the α6700 is highly portable. It claims a user-friendly, touch-operable vari-angle LCD monitor, coupled with a modern touch menu for effortless operation. Customisable front dial and a switching dial for still images, movies, and S&Q modes are also featured. It is also equipped with optical 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system with 5.0 stops[vi] of shutter speed advantage for stills and an Active Mode[vii] ensures stable footage.

In terms of connectivity, the camera now supports the Creators’ App[viii] for seamless uploads of videos and still images to cloud services. Sony also plans to roll out a new version of the “Camera Remote SDK” in July 2023, allowing remote operation and setting adjustments.

    Environmental conscious and accessibility

Over the past 10 years, Sony has replaced approximately 379 tons[ix] of virgin plastic with recycled plastic in digital cameras and digital video cameras. Recycled materials, including SORPLASTM[x], are actively used for the camera body, reducing environmental impact without sacrificing functionality. In addition, it is equipped with a Screen Reader function[xi] that reads menus and video playback screens aloud to assist operations, supporting the creative activities of a wide variety of creators.

Main features of shotgun microphone ECM-M1

Sony is set to launch the ECM-M1, the world’s first shotgun microphone with eight dial-selectable audio recording modes[xii]. With 4 microphone capsules and unique beamforming and advanced digital processing technology, it offers varied modes including stereo. Its ultra-directional mode captures targeted sound from the front (within a 30-degree width) and at the same time effectively suppresses other sounds, dynamically adapting to ambient sound in the surroundings. This mode is ideal for interviews and selfie-oriented scenarios where the subject is always in front of the microphone.

A newly added mode dial with a locking mechanism ensures easy, secure switching of sound pickup modes. The ECM-M1 features noise reduction utilities like a noise cut filter for reducing background noise and a low-cut filter for minimising vibration and low frequency noise. These filters are implemented through digital signal processing, maximising audio quality at the recording stage and thereby reducing the need for complex post processing. It also supports 4-channel recording (compatible cameras only), allowing safety recording in omnidirectional mode on channels 3 and 4, while channels 1 and 2 focus on selected directivity.

Compact and lightweight, the ECM-M1 enhances mobility, empowering creators to capture high-quality audio in diverse situations. Simply clip the microphone into the Multi Interface Shoe on a compatible camera for direct power and audio connections without the need for extra cables or batteries. When connected via the Multi Interface Shoe of a compatible camera that features a built-in digital audio interface, the audio signal is directly transferred to the camera in digital form so that no degradation can occur. A simple switch also provides compatibility with a wide range of cameras using an analogue interface.

    Pricing and Availability

The new α6700 and ECM-M1 will be available from September 2023 onwards[xiii]. Both products will be sold at a variety of Sony’s authorised dealers throughout Malaysia.
