  • EXTEND TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR REDUCING THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) ACT 2020 [ACT 829] AND EXERCISE THE POWER TO INTRODUCE A SPECIAL MORATORIUM TO ACHIEVE RECOVERY

Nearly 100 captains of industry attended the FMBA’s Second Annual General Meeting, which was presided over by His Excellency Dato’ Sri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, on September 27, 2022, at the Tun Rahah Auditorium, Menara Pernas, Tower 7, Avenue 7, Bangsar South City, No. 8, Jalan Kerinchi, 59200 Kuala Lumpur (Economy).

In the Annual General Meeting, we have heard views, complaints, problems, feedback and suggestions from affiliated members who attended the Second Annual General Meeting from around the country who are striving to recover in their respective industries as a result of being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the threats to the Industry that have yet to be resolved by the parties involved.

Among those that have been discussed is the TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR REDUCING THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) ACT 2020 [ACT 829] which will cease to be effective on 22nd October 2022, and we are of the opinion that when the Act has been stopped, the businesses that have been affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic will no longer receive special protection against their creditors.

The matter has clearly been proven when the Act was almost withdrawn last year has seen banking or financial institutions have started pressuring businesses to get back the amount of loans owed without looking and/or considering the current economic situation of the business until some have taken steps to declare the Company Director for the business bankrupt. The matter has affected the score of the financial position of those businesses when they have been listed in credit reporting agencies and/or financial information systems as well as listed with the Malaysian Insolvency Department and it will take time to settle the debt and could not been involved in any future business. This will also affect the economy when businesses that can recover and return to competitiveness have to close. However, with the Temporary Measures For Reducing The Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) Act 2020 [Act 829], Banking or financial institutions cannot take legal action to declare bankruptcy on those businesses, even payments may be suspended under the said Act.

Furthermore, this Act is to provide special protection to those businesses from Banking or financial institutions, property owners and also enable them to postpone the execution of private contracts or performance bonds as mentioned in “Section 7 Schedule – List of Contract Categories” of the Act 829. In the Annual General Meeting, the Affiliate Members have unanimously agreed with an Emergency Resolution in requesting the Malaysian Government to exercise its authority to introduce a SPECIAL MORATORIUM to give space to their businesses to strengthen the financial flow of their respective businesses who is still struggling to recover.

THEREFORE, After evaluating and considering all the responses from the members of the Federation of Malaysian Business Associations (FMBA), we call on the Malaysian Government to EXTEND THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR REDUCING THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) ACT 2020 [ACT 829] and INTRODUCE A SPECIAL MORATORIUM to give space to their businesses to re-strengthen the financial flow of their respective businesses that still cannot recover due to the current economic situation. Business entrepreneurs NEED SUPPORT AND NOT PRESSURE in jointly driving their respective businesses towards recovery and excellence in line with the Government’s efforts for and on behalf of FEDERATION OF MALAYSIAN BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS (FMBA).

  • MALAYSIA-SOUTH KOREA COLLABORATION INTRODUCES THE LATEST CANCER TREATMENT, NK CELL THERAPY

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd. took held at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). This arrangement allows UKM to manufacture MYJ1633, which contains natural killer cells (NK Cells) and natural killer T cells (NKT Cells) (NKT Cell). It has the potential to be used to treat cancer patients.

There are more than 48,000 new cancer cases in Malaysia as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and this number will double by 2040. This will ultimately burden the country’s healthcare system and have a direct impact on the emotional, physical, and financial health of cancer patients. Currently, there are more than 150 oncologists in Malaysia making the ratio of 1 specialist doctor to 220,000 patients. In this regard, experts need the latest methods to provide appropriate treatment to cancer patients and NK Cell is poised to be one of the preferred measures.

NK Cell is part of the human immune system that plays an important role in destroying tumor cells and virus-infected cells. Due to this, research has been conducted and proved that these cells have the potential to be used for cancer immunotherapy treatment (Choi et al., 2019). As a result, ImmunisBio Co. Ltd.  (Korea) has developed and patented a technology to activate and expand NK and NKT cells in the laboratory. The final product is known as MYJ1633. Through this agreement, UKM is able to produce MYJ1633 for the Malaysian market through NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd.

UKM Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Affairs, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani said, “I sincerely hope that this collaboration will provide a significant impact to the society and bring benefits to the country. Private-public partnerships are now regarded as the new frontier for higher learning institutions as we now have to embark on more tangible, deliverable and lab-to-market innovative research studies to produce more clinical products and services. We also hope that more medical products for the treatment of various diseases can be manufactured under the certified cGMP lab and CTERM UKM.”.

Chief Executive Officer of NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd., Dr. Park Ji-Youn said, “This milestone marks the joint efforts in the field of science, technology and medicine. We are able to produce MYJ1633, which is safe and reliable. In 2018,  it was certified and approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan. This benefits Malaysians especially cancer and autoimmune patients. MYJ1633 will also be registered under the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) with the help from CTERM UKM. I sincerely believe that both parties will benefit from this collaboration.”.

This agreement has the potential to be a new hope for cancer patients in Malaysia who are seeking treatment other than chemotherapy. Patients have options according to their ability and suitability ensuring continuous treatment.

This ceremony was also attended by the Dean of the UKM Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor, Deputy Dean (Network and Alumni) Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Head of Department of Center for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (CTERM) UKM, Prof. Associate Dr. Mohd Fauzi Mh Busra, head of departments and health experts in Malaysia.

  • CNCRD LAUNCHES ITSELF INTO THE TECH SCENE BY CREATING THE FIRST MALAYSIAN CURATED DIGITAL PLATFORM FOR SNEAKERHEADS TO BUY AND SELL THEIR SNEAKERS

CNCRD is the newest Malaysian tech business to enter the market with the aim of upending the existing sneaker reselling culture. The curated platform, created as a one-stop shop to sell and buy shoes on the secondary market, not only makes it simpler for its audience to navigate the crowded and sometimes overwhelming market, but also lowers the risk of getting burned with knockoffs or simply getting the wrong product altogether.

Founded by Ryan Ng, a 22 year old techpreneur and an avid sneakerhead, and he said, “We’ve taken into account the many recent shifts in the reselling culture – both locally and globally. A great deal for a pair of shoes today could be terrible tomorrow. This is where CNCRD comes in to ultimately cement our vision to provide the best retail e-commerce experience for our users. And for CNCRD to also provide an offline experience for our customers to buy and sell the latest, most coveted sneakers in the best way possible is our way of taking the business to the next level. On top of the online platform, CNCRD has also simultaneously launched its brick and mortar showroom at The Five, Damansara Heights to bring the best of both worlds – the scalability of technology to sellers and the intimacy of a physical space to our customers. We believe this hybrid shopping experience is the way to go”.

Hailing from Muar, Ryan was introduced into this scene when he first came to Kuala Lumpur for college. “It was 2018 and I was turning 18 at the time, there was a buzz amongst my friends about the Jordan 1 Nigel Sylvester’s and it was the first pair that sparked an interest to dig deeper into the scene. I was living on a basic allowance and all I could do was admire it. The first pair I’ve ever ‘flipped’ was a pair of UltraBoosts and my best friend of 15 years was my first ever customer. It was a very ecstatic feeling, that catapulted and snowballed to selling my first 5, 10, 20 pairs of sneakers”, explained Ryan further.

It was with this realisation, that what he did could be a business, that propelled him to team up with his good friend, Bryan Ong to incorporate a partnership. With the aim of creating an ecosystem that is transparent for sellers and a whole new experience for consumers, CNCRD was finally established in Q4 of 2021, to bridge the gap between sellers and buyers seamlessly. “In time, we hope to expand our product category to include apparel, collectibles and many more. But for now our focus is to firm up the system, educating our audience, creating the awareness and to utilise data to maximise sales for sellers and cater to a more curated shopping experience for end users”, quips Bryan.

Naming Eddy Lu, CEO and Co-Founder of GOAT and Kevin Ma, CEO of HYPEBEAST as their major source of inspiration, CNCRD resides on the mission to grow sustainably as a company into business segments of similar synergies while constantly providing value for its users. In the long run, CNCRD aims to position itself as a tech conglomerate and to venture into various segmentations of technology and other digital business landscapes. To strengthen the team, Ryan and Bryan have roped in Ric Wang as a co-founder and Creative Director of CNCRD.

“Together with Bryan, Ric and our whole team at CNCRD, I hope to work and lead CNCRD to cement its position as an industry leader both locally and regionally, to grow sustainably and to maximise our shareholders’ returns. The executive team utilises data-driven decision to ensure that our growth is sustainable and investments in different business segments internationally are collaboratively appropriate. I believe very strongly that the chemistry and synergy of the team has what it takes to contend and to build an exciting culture that are both innovative and efficiently in its troubleshooting – eliminating ambiguity and short-term solutions.

“As it is with the sneaker culture, it is also paramount for us to create a “CNCRD tribe”. We have planned out various activities that aims to serve multi-disciplinary creatives by working together on cultivating our physical space. CNCRD’s creative direction serves as a narrative to radiate multi-disciplines of culture ranging from fashion, art, design all the way to food and sports. The launch of our showroom recently is a testament of this as it was attended by the who’s who of the KL scene from various industries.

I also have to mention here that we are in the midst of developing our CNCRD app (due by Q2 2023) but in the meantime, do visit our website; and if you are in the Damansara Heights area, come visit our showroom and check out what CNCRD is all about!”, enthused the effervescent Ryan.

  • VARIANTE COLLABORATES WITH PINK UNITY IN RAISING CANCER AWARENESS

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 October 2022 – SINCE 2013, RUNAWAY HAS BEEN A SUCCESS. VARIANTE is in its ninth year of working with Pink Unity, an organisation affiliated with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), to increase awareness and support for cancer survivors.

Based on the concept of “By survivors, for survivors ” Pink Unity believes that no one knows the myriad of emotions, insecurities, needs and wants of women cancer survivors and newly-diagnosed cancer patients better than the survivors themselves. Different from other cancer organisations, Pink Unity is wholly run by women cancer survivors as a peer support group for the benefit of other women cancer survivors. “Leslie through VARIANTE, has been helping, donating and collaborating with us for more than 10 years,” said Puan Lena Abdullah, President of Pink Unity.

“VARIANTE was the first to sponsor Pink Unity with blouses, and beautiful Baju Kurung for our ladies to wear for an Islamic fashion show. At a time when we did not have enough funds to purchase more than 20 pieces of clothing for our ladies, VARIANTE had come forward and provided them for free,” explained Puan Lena. This was the start of the ‘Fashion Fights Cancer’ for VARIANTE and Pink Unity CSR Campaign. Leslie Variyan, Chair and Founder of VARIANTE, strongly believes in giving back to society and had selected Pink Unity as their partner to do so.

“We believe that each of us know of someone directly or indirectly who has had cancer or even sadly has passed away from cancer. Pink unity provides an amazing source of support whether it is emotionally, physically, financially or simply by just being there for the patient. People out there need to know the work pink unity volunteers have done for the patients, survivors and even caregivers. By creating awareness, we might just encourage more people to offer assistance in any form, “ explained Mr. Leslie on his reason for supporting Pink Unity.

Since 2013, VARIANTE had worked with Pink Unity to create a piece of unique fashion item to be sold and the profits donated to Pink Unity. This year, VARIANTE has exclusively designed three (3) scarves using the pink carnation as their source of inspiration.

“The pink carnation is a symbol of love, gratitude and appreciation. These scarves are made in the most comfortable and soft premium satin. It’s suitable as a complete head cover or fashion accessory around the neck,” explained Mr. Leslie when asked about the scarves design.

As in the previous years, VARIANTE has pledged that their proceeds for the entire month of October are to be channelled to Pink Unity. “These scarves can be purchased at any of our seven (7) outlets or online. There’s so much to be done and we all can lend a hand to make this world a better place,” said Mr. Leslie. VARIANTE’s involvement is not only limited to the design, sale and donation to Pink Unity. “The best part is that VARIANTE always makes sure that the survivors are involved in the design creation and participate in our activities, which creates a close bond” exclaimed Puan Lena.

This year saw two (2) prominent personalities share the stage to present their own cancer-related stories. Raja Azura, Malaysia’s actress and singer spoke of her experience. She was followed by the evergreen jazz singer Noryn Aziz who wowed the audience with her evergreen jazz number. She dedicated her song to all cancer caregivers and cancer survivors. Puan Lena Abdullah also took the stage to share her experience in Pink Unity.

At the close of the event, Puan Lena once again expressed her gratitude by thanking VARIANTE for their continuous support. Pink Unity has done well in their collaboration with various organisations to educate and create cancer awareness, but most importantly in providing support and hope for a life after cancer. VARIANTE is exemplary as an SME in its sincere desire to create awareness of cancer and to give back to the cancer society consistently for almost a decade.
