  • UNIMAS and the Sarawak government are hosting the global conference on education, research, and collaboration as a means of enhancing public health.

UNIMAS and the Sarawak government are hosting the global conference on education, research, and collaboration as a means of enhancing public health.

After winning the bid to host the 54th Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) Conference in 2023 with the assistance of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and the Sarawak Government are now paving the way for the development of global public health. Sarawak has gained international attention for its successful community and public health measures.

The conference is set to take place from 30 October to 1 November 2023 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching with an expected crowd of 800 public health experts, practitioners and industry collaborators from across the world. The main organiser, Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health has entrusted UNIMAS as the local host; while the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak, Sarawak State Health Department, and BESarawak are supporting the conference.

One of Sarawak’s biggest challenges is having to meet the public healthcare needs of 3 million people; concentrated in its urban districts and dispersed throughout the rural areas. The Sarawak Government has already made significant efforts to meet the demand with efforts such as forming the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, building the Sarawak Heart Centre, and investing RM200 million ($45 million) in the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre. The government is also in talks with the Ministry of Health Malaysia to open a cancer care centre.

The theme for the 54th APACPH Conference is ‘Transcending the New Normal: Strengthening Public Health Through Education, Research and Collaboration’ and aims to provide a strong platform for policy and strategy development; implementation of educational, research and training programmes, and demonstration of effective interventions in the field of community and public health.

“Education, research, and collaborations with related agencies and collaborations are fundamental in tackling current and future public health matters such as communicable and non-communicable diseases which are still major challenges in Malaysia”, explained Professor Dr Maznah Dahlui, Vice President (Administration) for Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium of Public Health (APACPH International), President and Regional Director (APACPH Kuala Lumpur), and Head of Department of Research Development and Innovation as well as Head of Division of Health Economic Research and Case-mix at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. “Higher education plays a critical role in addressing public health challenges and we hope that the conference will motivate everyone to cross boundaries and work together toward a common goal.”

In terms of the legacy impact, some anticipated impacts from the conference include enhancing action plans to assist higher education institutions to achieve United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and expand their members’ networks at the local and international levels through strategic collaborations.

“The 54th APACPH Conference is a strong event to reflect the importance of purpose-driven business events in sector and community development,” stated Amelia Roziman, BESarawak’s CEO. “We are working with the conference committee to address 4 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which are Good Health and Well-being; Quality Education; Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Partnerships for the Goals. The legacy that we hope for is that this conference in Sarawak is the key to Malaysia and Asia’s public health developments.”

Enjoy early bird registration rates starting from MYR700 for Malaysians and USD 200 for Internationals. Early bird registration ends on 30 June 2023. For more information on APACPH 2023, please contact Associate Professor Dr Jeffrey Anak Stephen (Conference Chairman and Head, Department of Community Health and Public Health at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak – UNIMAS) via email at enquiry@apacph2023conference.com. • PASSION INSPIRES LEGACIES: 10TH ANAK SARAWAK AWARDS ON MAY 12TH

PASSION INSPIRES LEGACIES: 10TH ANAK SARAWAK AWARDS ON MAY 12TH

The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, the Premier of Sarawak, will be the guest of honour during the 10th Anak Sarawak Awards event on May 12, 2023, at the Imperial Hotel Kuching.

The prestigious event by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) will carry the theme ‘Passion Inspires Legacies’ to honour exceptional individuals and organisations whose passion, commitment and forward-thinking approaches are leading Sarawak into its strongest era of business events.  Besides aligning with Sarawak’s advocacy of business events legacies, the theme is a celebration of the industry’s strong post-pandemic revival.

One of the highlights of this year’s Anak Sarawak Awards is the Sarawak Legacy Award. It is the newest category to acknowledge conventions that focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) agendas and prioritise legacy as its long-term result.

Another major highlight to look forward to is the launching of Malaysia’s first-ever Business Events Sarawak Legacy (BESLegacy) Ambassador Programme, a community of influential business events and legacy advocates to amplify the destination’s purpose of developing social and economic transformation through business event legacies. The first group of ambassadors will be revealed during the launch.

“Business events are crucial to executing the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy and turning Sarawak into a thriving destination that enjoys economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability by 2030,” expressed The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. “With our focus on business events legacy impacts, the sector is very much capable of producing economic legacies that support our intended growth rate of 8% per annum and social legacies that reduce urban and rural development gaps.”

“It has been 5 years since we last hosted Anak Sarawak Awards due to the pandemic, so we are very excited to celebrate the achievements of the business events community,” said The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts. “The resilience, creativity and innovation shown by the industry in the face of unprecedented challenges and opportunities brought over 2 million visitor arrivals and over MYR3.87 million in tourism receipts in 2022.  This year, we are targeting 3 million visitors and MYR7.25 billion in tourism receipts and believe that business events will contribute to a good portion of the arrivals.”

Passion Inspires Legacies is a theme that is very close to our hearts,” said BESarawak’s Chairman,

Dato Sri Abang Haji Abdul Karim Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. “Passion is the fuel that drives us to pursue our goals, persevere through adversities and make a lasting impact. In business events, passion often leads to innovation and progress which is at the centre of what we do. We hope that this year’s awards  will inspire more in the sector to strive for excellence, and more outside of the sector to consider using business events as a legacy tool.”

This year’s judging committee comprised members from international associations, Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA); Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA); Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), and Malaysian Association Of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS). Pinkfish Festival, Malaysia, April 2023

On Labour Day Weekend, Hitman Solutions and Happymoon hosted the Pinkfish Music & Arts Festival, a curated creative music and arts experience that gave Malaysians and visitors from other parts of the region an absolutely unforgettable experience. The highly charged day featured live performances from both local and foreign artists as well as art installations created by a variety of multi-talented artists at Surf Beach in Sunway Lagoon.

Over 8,000 music and art enthusiasts, also known as LAVAs, from Malaysia and across the country including visitors from the rest of Asia & Europe were present to dance along to their favourite tunes and celebrate the local art scene. Rain or shine, it didn’t stop attendees from enjoying everything the festival had to offer. The festival also showcased the best in fashion, with festival-goers decked in colourful and fun festival wear.

There were even stiltwalkers to greet the crowd, caricature artists and other performance experts to liven up the crowd as they explored the festival grounds. Another highlight was the Lumi Funland that gave all those who attended a trip down memory lane, featuring kaleidoscopic seesaws and swing sets, perfect for the Instagram-worthy shot. Sun Cabana ticket holders partied in an exclusive elevated area which provided a bird’s eye view of the phenomenal stages and performances.

The Pinkfish Festival started out strong with RIMKA opening the show at the Beach Hut, Chukiess & Whackboi, Nahsyk, BATE and Mister Ariffin later joined her at the Beach Hut. A stage for local heroes, it was packed with fans, proving that love for the local music scene runs deep. The crowd’s energy was contagious, providing an immersive performance for all, allowing them to get up close and personal.

Over on the Main Stage, Saturdayselects kicked things off and got everyone on their feet and dancing to the beat. Things kicked into high gear with Gard Wuzgut & Ramengvrl, plus an electrifying performance by Joe Flizzow, Meduza, Yellow Claw and Dash Berlin. Festival-goers too got to experience international-level displays that showcased a spectacular experience of interactive fun.

The headliner of Pinkfish Festival, DJ Snake, opened his set to a roaring crowd, proving why he is a headliner. An amazing light & pyrotechnics show accompanied him during his set, giving everyone an unexpected but fantastic surprise. Despite being the last act, he had everyone wanting more, featuring all of his all-time favourite hits like ‘Taki Taki’, ‘Turn Down For What’, ‘Get Low’ and many more. During his set, he had the crowd cheering as he waved the Malaysian flag and thanked everyone with a sincere “Terima Kasih”. As he left the stage, shouts for an encore could be heard throughout Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach.

A big feature of the festival was unveiled – a 15 foot, giant inflatable version of “Chaigo”, a comic-style dog designed by local graffiti artist, Kenji Chai. He was on-deck giving away custom hand-sprayed graffiti t-shirts for some lucky festival-goers. He was joined by Pami, Kaze and Spike – showcasing a live demo which provided an in-depth look into what it takes to make an art installation come to life – from conception to production. This installation was a massive 16 feet, giving everyone a close-up look at these magnificent art pieces by local talents. Pinkfish Festival also featured artwork from winners of the “Spray Your Art Out” contest, Yan Li Yi, Ganz and Duke Chua.
